FAQ

How do you get a fishing rod in Prehistoric Farm?
Talk to Tyler the Fisher on the home island. Two guide videos independently list the basic rod at 150 coins, bought after (or alongside) bait — once purchased, the rod appears in your hotbar and you can cast anywhere on open water.
What do fish sell for in Prehistoric Farm?
Very little — about 5-10 coins per fish in playthrough footage, with a full catch batch worth 16 coins in one recorded sale. Fishing is downtime filler, not an income strategy; fossil sets and grotto eggs are where money comes from.
How does the fishing minigame work?
A cast throws the hook into the water and the camera follows it underwater — steer the hook into fish on the way down, then left-click to raise it while reeling. A reel meter with multipliers (x1.2, x1.6 seen on record) appears during the fight; if it empties, the fish escapes.
What fish can you catch in Prehistoric Farm?
Species confirmed by footage and captions include mackerel, pufferfish, sardine, swordfish and coelacanth, plus the urchin fish that the Sky Spires quest needs. Fish come in rarity tiers — footage shows yellow and purple catch cards and a 'legendary fish' moment.
Does it matter where you fish?
One playthrough tested it and concluded 'it doesn't seem to make any difference where we fish', while also hoping deeper water farther out might hold rarer catches. No verified source documents location-based fish tables — the honest answer is that location bonuses are unproven.

How do you start fishing in Prehistoric Farm?

The official Explore list sells it as “Fish the open sea and dive for rare catches” — and that split (a rod activity plus a diving camera) is exactly what you get. The entry point is Tyler the Fisher on the home island: his dialog offers Buy Bait, Show me your rods, and small talk. Two separate guide videos put the basic rod at 150 coins, and bait sells cheap alongside it — one walkthrough notes you can stack up to 15 bait at a time.

Once bought, the rod lands in your hotbar and you can cast from the shore or a dock — anywhere with open water in reach. If you are brand new, the beginner guide covers getting your first 150 coins in about one dig session.

How does a cast actually work?

Aim at water, cast, and the camera dives with your hook. The on-screen hint says it directly: “Steer the hook into the fish on the way down” — a good cast threads the sinking hook through the fish shadows before you start reeling. Land the cast well and the game announces “PERFECT THROW!”; our footage even caught one mid-fog with an egg incubating in the corner, which is the whole value proposition of fishing (more on that below).

Miss the school and the game tells you plainly: “Nothing bit…” with the same steer-the-hook advice. A whiffed cast costs one bait and a few seconds — the loop is forgiving.

What is the underwater hook-steering minigame?

This is the part that makes Prehistoric Farm’s fishing feel different from every other Roblox fishing copy: after the cast, you are effectively diving with your hook. The camera follows it down past kelp, ruins and labeled fish — each species floats with a name tag (Sardine, Pufferfish, Moonfish, Coelacanth…) so you can pick your target before committing.

The water goes deeper than it first looks — footage shows hooks working at 27 meters, down where sunken treasure chests sit on the seafloor next to coelacanths. Whether those chests are interactable is undocumented; what is documented is that the diving layer is a real space, not a backdrop.

The rare catches the official text teases live down here too — a swordfish cruising past the hook at 14 meters is exactly the “steer into the good fish” moment the minigame is built around.

How does the catch and reel resolve?

Hook a fish and a reel meter appears with a visible multiplier — x1.2 and x1.6 are both on record in playthrough footage. Keep the catch bar from emptying and the fish is yours, announced with a “GOT ON!” card and XP.

Let the meter drain and the fish is gone — the same “Nothing bit…” style failure card closes the attempt. One walkthrough describes the rhythm as “push and pull while dodging”; in practice it is a short, readable tug-of-war, far quicker than a dig cycle.

Which fish can you catch?

Species confirmed across footage and captions: mackerel, pufferfish, sardine, swordfish, coelacanth — plus the urchin fish, which matters because Clara’s Sky Egg quest requires catching 20 of them (full walkthrough in our flying dinosaurs guide). Catches arrive as color-coded cards — yellow and purple tiers are visible on record — and at least one first-playthrough video calls out a legendary fish sighting. No published odds table exists; treat rarity rates as unverified.

Where do you sell fish, and what are they worth?

Fish are sold through Ronald’s Collection — the collector NPC’s menu tabs fossils, fish and dinos, with a running “Worth: X coins” total for your haul. The numbers are humble: playthrough footage logs individual fish at about 5-10 coins, and one recorded collection total read just 16 coins.

That is the honest income verdict: fishing is the bottom of the verified money hierarchy in our money guide — behind code redemptions (codes page), fossil-set digging and egg theft runs in the Sunken Grotto.

Is fishing worth your time?

As income, no. As free progress during dead time, absolutely — and this is the loop experienced players actually run: an egg incubates in minutes (observed timers in our egg incubation guide), and every one of those minutes can be a few casts off the dock instead of standing at the incubator. Fish while you wait, sell the haul on the way past Ronald, and you have lost nothing. When Update 1 made the urchin fish a quest currency for the Sky Spires line, fishing picked up a second job as a progression requirement — one more reason the rod is a 150-coin purchase worth making early. For what to do with a hatched menagerie afterwards, the dinosaur list and best dinosaurs rankings are the next stop.
